These Present Days

Jesus once said regarding His second coming, “But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came, and took them all away.  So shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”
The import of these present times is not at all hard to discern, for the discerning heart.  And, it is actually fairly simple to understand where these days belong in the chronological order of God's  redemptive time table – if one's heart is truly attuned to the heart of God.  But, therein lies the real difficulty of these present times.

The pop-preachers of these present days would have the world believe that He is a complete “push-over.”  They typically present God as a broken-hearted Creator so desperate for a relationship with humanity that He simply “caves” on every requirement regarding the quality of that relationship.

So, it’s easy to see why these guys and gals remain so "popular."  What a “gorgeous” deception. Who wouldn’t be popular with a pitch like this:  All you have to do is make one statement of faith in Jesus, ratify it with a couple of tears (totally optional) in a single emotional moment, and you become eternally safe.  And, better still, the rest of your life is yours to do with as you please.  And, smartphones are free!  And, ice cream has no calories.  And yes, Virginia, there really is a Santa Clause.

But, as Yoda would say, “A mistake, you should not make, here.”  My ridicule does not change the great effectiveness of these pop-preachers and their message.  These boys and girls are very good at what they do.  And, they have already convinced a very wide swath of Christian Evangelicals at the rank and file level, across all denominations, to embrace this “Rabbit Hole” theology as their everyday, working belief system.  Indeed, seemingly, the “Rabbit Hole” has never looked so good to so many.

But boy, will these “Wonderland folks” be surprised when the doors open to The Great Throne Room on Judgement Day morning.  I have a feeling that when these poor deluded people catch their first glimpse of The Almighty, they will instantly know – “O-o-o-o, huge mistake!”

And, before that day is finished, they will know beyond all doubt that this God is anything but a broken-hearted pushover.  It will absolutely be clear that He is awesome, and totally in-charge, and very sophisticated in both His character and in His expectations – including what He expects from a relationship with us.

But alas, it’s true.  These present times are largely having none of that.  Thus, day by day, in huge numbers, we continue to be highly invested in the everyday shopping list of our material life.   And, we continue to completely under-invest in our relationship with God and His true redemptive expectations.  And, all the while, that prophesy of Jesus, which identifies these present times with the days of Noah, fulfills itself - largely, without our notice.
